The Hydrogen economy involves various advanced technologies from fundamental research to real application during the production, the transportation, the storage, and the final utilization.
The LETOMEC R&D Department works actively to the following themes regarding the hydrogen economy:
1. HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
To overcome the limits of the actual technologies it becomes necessary on one hand improve efficiency of the solar electrolysis on the other hand increase the materials (catalysed, electrodes…) used.
Our goal is to find the best materials and the technology starting from a prototype electrolyser up to a full scale version accepted by the industrial users.
2. PRODUCTION, TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE and UTILIZATION – MATERIAL SELECTION
The material selection plays a key role in the hydrogen economy: it is fundamental in the production, distribution, storage and final utilization.
To guarantee the safety during hydrogen transportation and storage it becomes mandatory to choice the best materials to avoid failure due to the Hydrogen Embrittlement phenomenon. Letomec team is composed by experts of Hydrogen Embrittlement investigation which offer its service consultancy during material choice promising cost saving for the production of gas grid, pipelines, high pressure cylinders, vehicle fuel tanks, fittings…
On the other hand it is well known that due to the size of the hydrogen molecules, hydrogen gas can leak more easily than other gases. In this scenario it becomes fundamental to select the best material to avoid any leakage and in the worst case explosions!
Letomec team helps industry in the fied of design and analysis of components, systems and mechanical parts (turbines, pipelines…).
3. PRODUCTION, TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE and UTILIZATION – MONITORING & RISK ASSESSMENT
HELIOS equipment can be useful for monitoring hydrogen diffusion in electrolyser, pipeline steel for hydrogen transportation, high pressure cylinders, vehicle fuel tanks, turbines… in order to prevent HE (Hydrogen Embrittlement) phenomena.
The HELIOS application will allow a real time online monitoring by permeation technique, to integrate the current conventional
approaches (ultrasonic test…) and prevent hydrogen-related failures with consequent economic benefit and safety improvement.
This innovative real-time non-destructive equipment is covered by Letomec patent and permits the real-time monitoring and will return information of eventual rise up of anomalous hydrogen permeation conditions.
