CRYSTAL project: Hydrogen Embrittlement risk in Automotive

CRYSTAL PROJECT

CRYSTAL project is a RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steels) Project, aimed to reduce the hydrogen embrittlement risk in High Strength Steels parts of Automotive Industry.

Hydrogen is always present in the part production stage steel. Steel compontents can adsorb hydrogen during working process of steel components. Monitoring and acquiring knowledge in this context represent a strong point and a great challenge for the future of industry.

Within the project’s framework, a novel solid-state sensor will facilitate quantitative in-situ hydrogen measurement within steel components. This sensor can be seamlessly integrated into industrial processes through the Industry 4.0 approach. Simultaneously, an exhaustive range of tests will be meticulously conducted.

The project will develop tools and procedures to determine the hydrogen content able to affect the mechanical properties of the component and to predict undesidered and premature failure of automotive High-Strength Steels.
